Our Story...

In the fall of 2009, the Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital was formed by a group of 11 women who shared stories like these. All of these women have a different relationship or experience with the Children’s Hospital, but they share one thing in common…a passion for healthy families. These women visualized a “grassroots” organization that would be built from a network of people...

“Friends” who are passionate

about helping the Children’s Hospital.

Through membership dues and fundraising activities...

Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital would contribute money back to the various hospital needs, while enhancing community awareness of the exceptional care delivered at the Hospital.

From a vision to reality, the Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital’s founding group hosted their first “Friendraising” event in the spring of 2010. Inviting their personal friends, the Friends organization grew exponentially overnight and the community awareness started to grow too. The awareness of Friends brought new partnerships and events designed to raise funds for the hospital, and in turn, more new Friends. Now, with a growing team of active members, Friends looks to what the future can bring – more Friends, more fundraising events, more hospital exposure, more community partnerships, more sponsors, more dollars raised, more healthy children and families.

Today, our network of Friends share all sorts of stories about their experience with the Children’s Hospital. Many don’t have a story to tell, many are not even members, many have suffered great loss, and many just have a conscience to do something for someone else. Friends of MUSC Children’s hospital visualize an organization where all the stories can be told and heard, and a place where a few little Friends can make a huge difference.

Start breaking out the

Christmas music and holiday decorations!

It’s that time of year to start breaking out the Christmas music and holiday decorations, and Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital is doing the same. We are returning to Hobcaw Creek Plantation for the 2nd Annual Holiday Mailbox Brigade. Members will be going door-to-door November 20 selling our handmade, holiday mailbox decorations, and will return in December to decorate the mailboxes.

Make sure to look for us in the 21st Annual Reindeer Run on December 3 as our members take to the streets and support MUSC Children’s Hospital. We would like to thank the Mailbox Brigade sponsors for their generous support. All proceeds and donations benefit MUSC Children’s Hospital Child Life Services.

The store’s management team and employees showed great enthusiasm toward the campaign, and did a great job getting the Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital’s name and cause out to the Charleston community. Also, a special thank you goes out to all their customers and everyone who made donations.

Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital is looking forward to expanding the Hands in Giving Campaign next year to include the entire state! All proceeds benefit MUSC Children’s Hospital Child Life Services.

A very special "Welcome"

to our new Intern, Katherine Marie Merkel!

On behalf of the Steering Committee for the Friends of MUSC Children's Hospital....

I am pleased to announce the addition of our very first intern! Katherine Marie Merkel, a senior at the College of Charleston, has officially joined our organization as of September 1. Originally from Roswell, Georgia, she moved to James Island 13 years ago with her family and instantly fell in love with Charleston's low country charm.

Early in her high school career, Katherine thrived working for her high school's weekly newscasts. That exposure influenced her to pursue a major in communication with a concentration in media studies. She has enjoyed her internships at WCIV Channel 4 and JDA Frontline ,and is looking forward to cultivating the art of public relations and marketing with the Friends of MUSC Children's Hospital organization. She will be responsible for keeping up with our social media and helping with our PR and marketing campaigns for various fundraising activities throughout the year.

We are thrilled to have her on board, and look forward to working with her throughout her senior year! If you need to contact Kathrine, feel free to send her an email at any time.

I was sitting in the Emergency Room at

MUSC Children’s Hospital praying for my son’s life

I got my son back 100% and, I am now giving back.....

I was sitting in the Emergency Room at MUSC Children’s Hospital praying for my son’s life. He had contracted bacterial meningitis and the doctors were not optimistic.

I got on my knees and made a commitment to God that if my son was restored 100%, I would promise to be a testimony forever to my blessings and to do whatever I could to give back to other Children’s Hospital families. I got my son back 100% and I am now giving back.
